Buying a raised bed – 5 things you should consider before purchasing

A raised bed is an excellent way to grow your own vegetables and herbs. It offers many advantages, such as ergonomic working and better control over the soil and plants. However, before you buy a raised bed, there are a few important aspects to consider. In this short guide, we will highlight some of the key considerations to help you find the ideal raised bed.

Location

Before purchasing, you should already have decided where your raised bed will get enough sunlight. It’s important that it’s not placed near trees or shrubs that could restrict the growth of your plants.

Size

To ensure you can grow all your desired plants, choosing the right size for your raised bed is crucial.

Material

Raised beds are available in various materials such as wood, plastic or metal. To ensure your raised bed brings you joy for a long time, it’s advisable to choose a robust and durable material that can withstand all weather conditions. Hot-dip galvanised steel sheet offers exactly this extreme durability and also provides excellent thermal insulation. This means the soil in the raised bed warms up more quickly, allowing plants to grow faster and better. A raised bed made of steel sheet is also a real eye-catcher with its stylish & modern design.

Drainage

Adequate drainage is essential to prevent waterlogging. When buying a raised bed, make sure it is equipped with holes in the base to allow excess water to drain away.

Price

The price of a raised bed varies depending on size, material and quality. For a long-lasting and high-quality product, it’s worth making an appropriate investment.

Conclusion

If you take the above factors into account, your plants will thrive beautifully. Look forward to a successful gardening season, because with a high-quality raised bed, growing and caring for your favourite plants becomes a real pleasure.

Frequently asked questions about our raised bed

Does the raised bed have a base?

No, the raised bed does not have a fixed base. Optionally, you can install a water-permeable intermediate base, for example to reduce the planting depth and the amount of filling material required.

How many litres of soil do I need for the 2x1 raised bed with intermediate base?

For the raised bed measuring 2x1 metres, you will need around 400 litres of soil with the intermediate base. This amount may vary slightly depending on the type of plants chosen and the soil layer.

When should I fill my raised bed?

Over the winter months, the raised bed loses volume and the material settles due to decomposition. This can cause small depressions or unevenness to form. This process is a normal part of the biological breakdown in the raised bed. For this reason, you should refill the raised bed in spring to compensate for the lost height. The advantage: at this time of year, temperatures are also mild and the soil contains sufficient moisture – ideal conditions for sowing and the growth of your plants.

How do I fill my raised bed correctly?

The raised bed should be filled in layers to ensure optimal plant growth. The bottom layer consists of coarse material such as branches or twigs. This is followed by a layer of grass or finely shredded material. On top of this comes a layer of compost and leaves. The top layer should be high-quality potting, humus or compost soil.

What do I need for sowing?

For sowing in the raised bed, you will need high-quality seeds, suitable sowing or seedling compost, and water for irrigation. In addition, gloves and small gardening tools such as a trowel are helpful for preparing the soil and distributing the seeds evenly.
Note: Plants need warmth, light and water to thrive. Until the sun gains strength in spring, it is also advisable to protect the delicate seedlings from the cool temperatures. In particular at night, you can use our cold frame attachment.

When is the best time for sowing?

The best time for sowing varies depending on the type of plant, as each variety has its own characteristics. Weather and temperature also play an important role. As a general rule: spring is ideal for most types of vegetables. Autumn vegetables such as kale and spinach should only be sown in late summer or autumn. In our sowing calendar, you will find a detailed list of the different types of vegetables to help you determine the right time to sow your chosen plants.

Sowing in the raised bed – what do I need to consider?

Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but not too wet. Also, follow the recommended depth for the particular seeds and ensure the correct spacing to create optimal growing conditions. Other aspects that can positively influence your harvest are suitable crop rotation and effective companion planting – as there are good and bad neighbours among plants too. In addition, slug protection may be necessary to protect your plants from pests. This construction is simply placed on top of the raised bed.
